Abstract

The paper analyses Urdu and Sindhi learners’ educational background and its influence on their English reading proficiency at the University of Sindh, Pakistan. 120 First year undergraduate participants from Sindhi (n=64) and Urdu speaking (n=56) groups were interviewed. The data were analyzed through quantitative content analysis method. The findings suggested that Sindhi and Urdu learners may differ in terms of the educational background and reading proficiency in English. It was also identified that educational background plays a pivotal role in English reading proficiency of learners at higher educational level.
